Stepping back and analyzing the effects that COVID has had on an organization is an exercise we believe every leader should perform. Good or bad, COVID has changed the way we do business and has also created what we like to think of as the COVID limelight, a unique highlighting of what is, or is not working in an organization.
Step back and look at the areas of your organization/department/team which were best positioned to accept change, pivot quickly and move you forward during the pandemic. Out of all your yearly planning goals, which ones made the biggest difference in weathering this storm? Which org-wide decisions were validated with tangible benefits that can be outlined and used as an example of, 'We need more of this!'? Did your employees say, 'Wow, my organization is doing things right. They navigated this change well and our company was impacted but we are stable.'?
Now for the not so fun part...
Take a step back and look at the challenges and inefficiencies within your organization which COVID illuminated. Which areas of your organization fell down the hardest? Were you not diversified enough and did you have all your proverbial eggs in one basket? Was your technology infrastructure so out of date you couldn't shift quickly enough to a ‘work from anywhere’ culture so you lost too much time and money catching up? Were you able to identify new areas of business and revenue but you weren't agile enough or quick enough to take advantage of the opportunity? Is your employee morale low? Are you losing good employees because they aren't confident in your direction and decision making?
To us, whether good or bad, the insights provided by the pandemic present an opportunity. It has highlighted (in a way you normally don't experience) the good things you need to keep doing and the bad things you need to change. So how do you capitalize on this opportunity?
